This saddens me too, especially since (as you pointed out), it goes against an important theme in the special. However, this sort of thing is happening with with so many other franchises, movies, and series. For example, Star Wars, an important cultural phenomenon is available for streaming only on Disney+. The convenience of streaming does come at a cost of other things. This, unfortunately, is one of them. The only thing that we, as consumers, can do is not support platforms that do this. This is, however, easier said than done. How many small businesses are lost in the wake of Amazon's convivences?)
As long as these specials are available for purchase on disc and/or digital services outside of streaming, we will still be able to experience them. I am saddened, like you, that there's a lack of a large population of people watching the same thing at the same time. However, I think that's something that's happening less and less as we go forward. It is again an unintended consequence to the convenience of streaming and on demand services.
